Artists Selected For 2012 Monhegan Residency

Kenny Cole, painter and installation artist from Monroe, and Emily Leonard Trenholm, a landscape artist from Portland, have been named the 2012 Monhegan Island artists-in-residence by the Monhegan Artists’ Residency Corporation (MARC).

A 1981 graduate of Pratt Institute, Cole has shown his work at a number of venues throughout the state, among them, the University of Maine Museum of Art, Space Gallery, and the Belfast Free Library. His imagery often makes reference to social, religious, and political issues.

Trenholm earned a BFA from the University of New Hampshire and an MFA from Boston University where she studied with John Walker. She responds to the natural world in an abstract and painterly fashion. She plans to paint on location while on Monhegan and also hopes to make watercolors and reduction block prints.

“We are pleased to be able to offer two five-week residencies on Monhegan this year,” said Susan Danly, chair of the MARC board. Grants from the Underhill, Quimby and Davis Family foundations support the program. The Monhegan Boat Lines will again provide free ferry passage for the artists.

The jury included June Fitzpatrick, June Fitzpatrick Gallery; Daniel Fuller, director, Institute of Contemporary Art, Maine College of Art; and sculptor Michael Shaughnessy, art teacher, University of Southern Maine.

New $10,000 Residency Opportunity for Maine Artists

The Maine Arts Commission and the New Brunswick Arts Board are working together on a cross-border artist residency program. Artists from Maine can apply for up to $10,000 to cover a one-to-three month residency for a creation-based or professional development project in New Brunswick, Canada.

This grant provides up to $10,000 to a Maine artists and the deadline for applications is April 1, 2012.

The grant provided by the Maine Arts Commission under this program is $3,000 maximum for one month, $6,000 maximum for two months and $9,000 maximum for three months. It is intended to cover the following expenses: the artist's personal insurance, accommodation and living expenses. It will also cover the costs of purchasing, transporting and insuring the materials required to carry out the project. Applicants may also request up to an additional $1000 to cover their travel expenses to and from their place of residency. One Creative Residency grant will be granted per year.

The proposed residency must take place between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013. Funding will be made available after June 15, 2012.

Apply to the Monhegan Artists’ Residency!

Applications are being accepted for the Monhegan Artists’ Residency for emerging Maine artists. This summer, the program will provide five-week residencies on Monhegan Island for two Maine-based visual artists.

The residency program provides living quarters and separate studio space at Fish and Maine plus a $500 stipend. The 2012 residencies run May 26 through June 30 and Sept. 1 through Oct. 6. Only Maine residents are eligible to apply.

The program is aimed at visual artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture or the digital arts. An important goal of the program is to enhance the careers of serious artists who have yet to gain wide recognition. Quality of work is the primary criterion for selection. Previous artist residents include Sarah Knock, David Little, Marguerite Robichaux, Karen Adrienne, Lynn Travis, Joe Kievitt and Alina Gallo.

A jury of art professionals will select the artists. This year’s judges are Michael Shaughnessy, sculptor and professor of art at University of Southern Maine; Portland gallerist June Fitzpatrick; and Daniel Fuller, director of the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art.

Call to Sculptors

The Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium is the largest public sculpture Symposium in the USA. The Symposium is looking for applicants to participate in the six week 2012 program from approximately July 22 through August 31, at the University of Maine on the Orono campus. Deadline for applications is December 31, 2011.

- Airfare, reimbursed up to $1500 USD with receipts.

- Ground Transportation provided to and from Maine airports, and during the symposium to community and symposium events.

The symposium will provide:
- Compressed Air
- Electricity and Electric Cords
- Air Hoses
- Fork Lift (and other necessary heavy equipment for moving and positioning stone)
- Quarried granite blocks of various shapes and sizes not to exceed 18,000 lbs. will be supplied by the Symposium. Both granite and basalt will be made available.

Sculptors should bring other tools as desired. Please check with the Symposium regarding the availability of specialized equipment.
