Montana following a very informative and stimulating NASAA (National Assembly
of State Arts Agencies) Executive Director Retreat. As I think about everything discussed and
debated over the past two days--from advocacy, administration and governance
to diversity, inclusion and the future--I am thoughtful about how all of this
applies to Maine. In some cases, Maine
is so different from other states; in other cases, not so much. We have a much friendlier environment when it
comes to our legislature and state government.
Some of the stories I’ve heard over the past two days about the
struggles the arts face in other states make me cringe...and be thankful for
what we have and what we have been able to accomplish over the past 3.5 years! It was eye-opening and well worth my time.
Chairman of the Commission, Charles Stanhope, accompanied me on this occasion. The official anniversary date for the NEA and its sister organization, the National Endowment for the Humanities, was September 29.

The day began with a panel of past and the current Chairs of the NEA which was moderated by PBS Newshour`s Judy Woodruff. The former Chairs in attendance were Frank Hodsoll, Jane Alexander, Bill Ivey (who will be our keynote at our 50th Anniversary Celebration on November 5 at Point Lookout), and Rocco Landesman - and they were joined by current Chair Jane Chu. It was an interesting discussion around past wins and future dreams for the NEA. Rocco Landesman voiced the controversy for the day when he declared that the NEA shouldn`t give 40% of its funding to state arts agencies. Needless-to-say this provided great fodder for conversation among my colleagues throughout the day.

Charles and I attended the Open House at the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies offices in the mid-afternoon. They recently moved to new digs and this was our first opportunity to see their impressive new space.

The highlight of the day was the reception and dinner following at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and two of her staff were present as was former Maine Arts Commission Member, Felicia Knight. New England was represented well with Alex Aldrich, Vermont Arts Council; Randy Rosenbaum, Rhode Island Council on the Arts; and Cathy Edwards and Larry Simpson, New England Foundation on the Arts in attendance. There were several presentations and performances that truly reminded us how privileged we are to be working in and on behalf of the arts.

- Julie

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Chair Charles Stanhope and me

Chairman of the NEA, Jane Chu and former Chair, Bill Ivey

www.MaineArts.com
Maine Arts Commissionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09374969927388297968noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6444429442048407370.post-33991070980410602992015-08-21T09:14:00.000-04:002015-08-21T09:39:46.597-04:00Maine Arts Commission Staff Are Artists, too - First in a SeriesExecutive Director

which she first sang with the Heritage Chorale in Oak Park, IL and has had the
opportunity to perform multiple times—and may again this coming December with the

MILFORD — For a quarter of a century Bill Mackowski traveled from Labrador to the Yukon and the far reaching corners of Quebec, flying his little float plane to remote native Cree and Inuit villages so he could learn traditional Native American snowshoe patterns. The far-flung adventures and hard travel left Mackowski in need of a new hip, ankle and knees, until finally he had to pack up his bush plane and sell it. But at 66, some say Mackowski is just getting started. Bill Mackowski’s personal odyssey has made him one of the foremost authorities on the many complex Native American snowshoe patterns.

His personal odyssey has made him one of the foremost authorities in North America on the many complex Native American snowshoe patterns. And three grants in the past two years from the Maine Arts Commission have allowed Mackowski to begin the next leg of his journey: the work of passing on the knowledge.

“If he were in Japan, Bill Mackowski would be considered a national treasure,” said Stephen Loring, an anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. “Japan has a wonderful policy of recognizing the artists rather than the objects, recognizing the skills that are important to Japanese culture and the people who preserve them.”

Loring called Mackowski’s trips to the Yukon and the outlying villages of Quebec and Labrador legendary. The Smithsonian anthropologist even called Mackowski a hero.

“He’s picked up a lot of the anthropological research work from the 1920s and 30s and even in the 19th century. He’s done detailed analysis, and he had the smarts to think about talking to the native people about the detail they put into the shoes,” Loring said. “But he’s also just passionate about the symbolism in the snowshoes as well as the craftsmanship.”

Because of his personal quest to preserve a dying art, Mackowski was twice named a Master Artist by the Maine Arts Commission and given three grants totaling $21,000 to continue his work. In addition, this winter the Penobscot Historic Preservation Commission received a grant for $3,200 from the Arts Commission for Mackowski to teach Penobscot women how to make snowshoes.

For decades, his basic, ash-and-nylon snowshoes have been sold across the country. Orders for these classic winter woods shoes come from foresters and game wardens. And they’re sold in outdoor outlets like Orvis.

But Mackowski’s passion is making the “fancy” snowshoe, as he calls it, those snowshoes with the intricate native designs made from deer hide and ash.

“My goal is to eventually bring the art form back to Indian Island, back to where it belongs,” Mackowski said of the Penobscot community, which sits across the Penobscot River from his home in Milford. “In my experience the Penobscot snowshoe design was the best in the world.”

A lifelong guide, trapper and woodsman, Mackowski has fashioned a showroom at his home that looks like a natural-history museum. His workroom could double as an old saw mill, with piles and pieces of ash everywhere, including in the air. Another barn houses part of an ancient snowshoe collection.

But of greatest value to Mackowski is the knowledge he gleaned from artisans he met in Cree and Inuit villages who could teach him a craft that dates back thousands of years.

“Some 50 to 75 years ago these people lived in remote locations in small family groups. They went everywhere with snowshoes. Everyone knew how to build them. It was a life skill like building a fire or making a canoe,” Mackowski said.

“My one regret is I never took any photos. It seemed an imposition.” He would go into remote villages with locals and ask the elders in the tribe how to weave their traditional snowshoe patterns and what those symbolized. These artisans were private people, reticent to share with a stranger. But Mackowski made friends.

“Bill has collected snowshoes from individuals who still use the same pattern and technique that have been used for several hundred years, if not thousands of years,” said snowshoe maker Anthony Jenkinson of North West River, Labrador. “He has been all over James Bay and Hudson Bay looking for the Cree people. He paid for it all out of his own pocket. And I don’t know where he refueled that little plane.”

When Mackowski started flying into remote villages in the mid-1980s, he had no support from the state or a university. For 25 years his interest in the ancient patterns of snowshoes and the living history that still exists in these places was self-driven and self-funded.

“One of the first things I said when I stepped in a door was that I was a trapper, and have trapped since I was 7,” Mackowski said. “These people all live subsistence lives, so that was an immediate connection. Then when I’d start asking about snowshoes they’d just stare at me. Why was I interested in that? But when we started talking, others in the tribe would drift into the room and listen.”

Mackowski’s devotion to the cultural importance of his craft is why two years ago the Maine Arts Commission gave him a grant to teach an apprentice with the Penobscot Nation.

“Bill is more like a renaissance man,” said Kathleen Mundell, the commission’s programs director. “And the fact he is reintroducing these techniques back into the community where they started, it’s gone full circle. He’s someone who has been a real champion for his art.”

Carol Dana, the Penobscot Nation’s language specialist, said there are no snowshoe makers on Indian Island now. But with Mackowski teaching the dying art, she has hope that will change. “The Penobscot pattern is quite ornate. I don’t remember ever seeing somebody do it, and I’m 62,” Dana said.

Penobscot Nation elementary school teacher John Neptune is Mackowski’s apprentice. He began learning the intricate Penobscot snowshoe design from Mackowski two years ago thanks to the commission’s grant. Now Neptune goes across the river to learn the craft from Mackowski, listen to his stories, and the two men trap together.

“I enjoy hearing his stories just as much as making the snowshoes. That’s how the tradition was (originally) passed on, through stories,” Neptune said. “Listening to Bill reminds me of an old native soul. He is very similar to the native elders.”

Neptune wants to be the individual who brings this lost art back to his tribe before it slips away. Like Dana, he has hope.

“I think it’s something our ancestors took a lot of pride in. Life has peeled away those traditions and cultures,” said Neptune, 43. “To me, I think it is the basic foundation of who we are. And it’s still there but it’s lost. We need to bring it home.”

Grant Size: Five grants (maximum of $1,000 each)
Application Deadline: January 31

General Information:
Recognizing the important role the arts can play in a school’s curriculum, the donors established this fund to encourage teachers in grades three through five to work with professional artists to bring the arts into the classroom and, in addition, to integrate a variety of art forms into the standard curriculum. The Fund challenges classroom teachers to explore innovative approaches to meet the following basic guidelines:

The artist(s) work(s) with the all the students in the grade(s) participating in the project

The artist(s) works with all the participating teachers to explore the integration of the arts into the standard curriculum. If agreed upon by the artist and teachers, other interested faculty may also participate.

Each year the Fund will award five grants, up to a maximum of $1,000 each. The application process involves a simple two-page project proposal, which addresses the following: anticipated benefits; timeline and milestones; possible barriers; and a use-of-funds budget. To further simplify the process, application submission and much of the communication will be completed by email.

Grant Guidelines:
Teachers will work with professional artists from the visual and/or performing arts, including but not limited to film, video, and other media, theater arts, music, dance and creative writing. Together, the teacher and artists will design a program in which teachers and students will learn through participating in the art form. The artist will also work with the teachers to develop a curriculum that will incorporate the arts in a meaningful way, helping the school to meet the Maine Learning Results.

Eligibility Requirements:
All public school teachers of grades three through five in Washington County in even years and in Penobscot County in odd years are eligible for consideration. Although not required, teachers of the three grades are encouraged to work collaboratively to present one project, and elementary schools with low enrollments (100 or less students) are encouraged to present one project for the school.

If there is an arts teacher in the relative field involved, that teacher should participate in the design and implementation of the project.

At least 75% of the funds awarded should be budgeted to artist’s fees.

Project Evaluation:
All grant recipients will be required to submit a project evaluation report upon completion of the project. The evaluation will describe how students and teachers have learned from the project, how the arts have been integrated into the curriculum, and how the project has helped the school further the Maine Learning Results.

How To Apply:
The grant application form can be downloaded here. Applications for grants should be forwarded by email to pcleghorn@mainecf.org or by fax to 773-8832.

When To Apply:
Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM, January 31. Awards will be announced in mid-February. All applicants will receive notice upon receipt of the application and of the committee's final decisions

If you have questions or would like to discuss an idea before submitting a proposal, please feel free to contact Pam Cleghorn in the Portland office via email or by phone at 207/761-2440.

Scope:

The Maine Arts Commission, in partnership with the First Lady of Maine Ann LePage, is issuing a call for student art for inclusion in the Spring 2014 Maine Youth Excellence in Art exhibition at the State Capitol Complex in Augusta. Selected works will hang in various locations including the State House, Cross Office Building (second floor), the Blaine House and the office of the Maine Arts Commission for approximately four months. Selected artists, their families and submitting teachers will be invited to an opening reception at the Blaine House hosted by the First Lady Ann LePage where they will receive recognition for their artistic achievements.

Process:

One piece of 2-D artwork may be submitted per school. Each school should have one designated teacher to submit the chosen artwork for that school. The program will exhibit approximately forty-five student works. Selection will be made on a first come, first served basis per Superintendent Region. Five pieces of work will be accepted from each of the nine Superintendent Regions. The regions are as follows:

Aroostook

Cumberland County

Hancock County

Kennebec County

Mid Coast

As an added element to this year’s showing we would like to collect a statement from each artist. If the child’s work is selected, we will ask the submitting teacher to provide a brief (one sentence) statement/quote from the artist’s work about their thoughts either toward making art in general, or about the specific piece that they are entering. These statements will be printed on each artwork’s label for the public to read. We believe this added element will assist in enlightening the audience about the essential need for art making in providing children with a comprehensive learning experience.

Teachers interested in submitting should e-mail Julie Horn at the Maine Arts Commission with any questions and/or a request to participate in the program. Please use the subject heading “SPRING 2014 MYEA” in your e-mail to Julie at julie.horn@maine.gov. Your confirmation e-mail will include further instructions and all necessary paperwork.

Important:

Only two-dimensional artwork will be accepted. Submitted art work must fit the maximum dimension of 18” x 24.” When submitting smaller artwork it has to be mounted on an 18” x 24” mat or poster board. There is a combined maximum thickness of 3/16’’ for artwork and mat together. The artwork can be exhibited vertically or horizontally (please indicate) and will be placed in pre-existing frames. Artwork submitted that does not fulfill these size requirements will be considered ineligible. All artwork must be labeled on the back with the student’s name, school, and grade. Please do not send artwork in cylinders or mailing tubes.

Deadline:

Artwork and paperwork must be received by Friday, December 6, 2013 for consideration in the exhibition.

It is that time of year again when the Maine Arts Commission calls for participation for one of its most enjoyable and successful arts education programs. Poetry Out Loud has just been amazing since we began it in 2006. We have had thousands of competitors, thousands of audience members, live radio broadcasts, live TV broadcasts, and been joined by celebrities, such as Richard Blanco. We already have 21 schools signed up and we are looking for more. The school registration deadline for this year’s Poetry Out Loud program is November 22, 2013.

The Poetry Out Loud competition is organized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation; it is administered at the state level by the Maine Arts Commission. Begun in high schools nationwide in 2006, the program encourages our nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. In addition to providing a meaningful arts education experience of poetry in written and spoken form, awards are provided to successful students and schools at the state and national level, including a $20,000 scholarship awarded to the POL National Champion. The Maine state winner receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip (with an adult chaperone) to Washington, D.C. to represent our state at the National Finals. His or her school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The Maine state runner-up receives $100 and his or her school receives $200 for the purchase of poetry books.

Over 7,500 students and more than 185 teachers from 36 high schools across Maine participated in Poetry Out Loud in 2012-2013. We anticipate that 2014 will be just as exciting and we encourage all teachers to consider giving their students the chance to shine in this nationwide celebration of poetry!

The Maine Arts Commission is pleased that schools can now register quickly and easily online by visiting www.MaineArts.com. Please note that Poetry Out Loud can take place in your school anytime between now and January 17, 2014, as the program does not require full class periods and can be completed in just two to three weeks. However, there are many opportunities to make Poetry Out Loud a larger part of your high school’s curriculum in English Language Arts or Visual and Performing Arts, including the program’s alignment with the Common Core English Language Arts Standards in the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading and for Language (http://www.poetryoutloud.org/teaching-resources/ncte-english-teaching-standards).

Please review the following timeline as you consider registering your school:

September – November 2013 School Registration (ongoing)

November 22, 2013 Last day to register for Poetry Out Loud

January 17, 2014 Last day for school-wide competitions

It's official, the Collins Center for the Arts are including free tickets to Friday night's performance of Mike Daisey -- THE SECRET WAR for registrants of the Maine International Conference on the Arts.

Mike Daisey is an American monologist, author, actor and raconteur best known for his monologue "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs" about the life of Steve Jobs, our enchantment with technology, and the story of how those devices are made in China. This transcript was downloaded over 100,000 times in the first week it was made available. Under a revolutionary open license it has seen more than forty productions around the world and been translated into six languages.

In this controversial new work, Mike Daisey is telling the most important story we're not allowed to talk about: the story of secrets. Why we make things secret, how we keep secrets, and the power that secrecy has over our world. From the personal to the political, Daisey talks about three men who were driven to reveal secrets: Edward Snowden, an NSA contractor who exposed how America spies on its citizens, Bradley Manning, imprisoned for years after revealing war crimes and atrocities, and Daniel Ellsberg, who released the Pentagon Papers that changed the course of the Vietnam War. These men are polarizing figures, all have been called traitors and heroes, whistleblowers and villains, as many struggle to define them. By focusing on the human, Daisey provides a startling look at how we all keep secrets and the price we pay for them.

This show will be at the Collins Center for the Arts during the Maine International Conference on the Arts, and it will be free to conference attendees. Tickets will be provided when registrants collect their materials from the registration desk. Register today to take advantage of this, and all the other amazing things on offer at the Maine International Conference on the Arts.

Every workshop at the Maine International Conference on the Arts promises to provide an incredible learning experience for conference goers. One of these amazing opportunities to learn is the marketing workshop provided by Stephen Belth. This workshop will provide you with everything you need to develop a strong marketing strategy for yourself, your organization, or your community. This workshop alone is worth the registration fee.

It is not possible to find many people more qualified to teach a two-hour workshop on marketing in the arts than Stephen Belth. As Director of Arts Marketing Network, Inc. (AMN), Stephen has developed literally hundreds of audience acquisition and retention campaigns for cultural institutions throughout the United States. With expertise in direct marketing, market research, interactive and e-promotion, graphic design, and strategic planning, his programs have delivered millions of dollars in ticket sales and membership revenue and have helped orchestras, performing arts organizations, and museums dramatically increase their audiences.

His client roster has been highlighted by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seattle's ACT Theatre, Live From Lincoln Center, the Brookfield (IL) Zoo, the John G. Shedd Aquarium, KUOW-FM, Seattle’s Public Radio station, Indiana University, Arts Administration Program, IU Auditorium, Tanglewood, Ravinia, and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others.

Prior to founding AMN, Belth held the position of Vice President for Marketing and Communications for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) from 1995-1998. While there, he supervised all promotion, brand identity, graphics, and communications of this 107-year-old company, during which annual sales revenue grew from $15 million to nearly $23 million.

Prior to his work at the CSO, Belth was Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl, a $40 million-a-year institution, credited with the most individual tickets sold of any major orchestra. Among his campaign highlights were “Philharmonic Style,” a program designed to attract younger audiences to concertgoing, and “The Pool Circle,” a Hollywood Bowl value-added subscription program which created a platinum circle among the Bowl’s already affluent subscribers.

In the decade before going to the LA Philharmonic, Belth was President and Founder of Arts and Science Development Service, Inc., a unique service company, providing database marketing to more than 300 hundred arts and cultural institutions nationally (ASDS).

Belth currently serves on the Steering Committee of the National Arts Marketing Project of Americans for the Arts. He has presented seminars in performing arts marketing for the League of American Orchestras (formerly American Symphony Orchestra League,) Indiana University, University of Chicago, and the Arts and Business Council of Chicago and is a frequent speaker at marketing conferences and trade shows. He has taught marketing at Columbia College, Chicago, has published several articles on marketing, and is currently working on a book on audience development.

Just one of the many amazing workshops at the Maine International Conference on the Arts (MICA) is one which introduces affordable health insurance options for artists and employees of cultural institutions. It is not enough to visit a website, so why not come to this workshop, learn what is available and then ask your questions. One-on-one assistance is just another benefit of the MICA conference, and if a workshop and Q&A session is not enough, then how about two days to speak with these experts on your own schedule. We are facilitating the exchange room where you can discuss the issues of your choice with experts, such as the ones presenting the workshop on affordable health care options. Read their introduction below and register today. The conference is only $90 for two days of professional development, and it includes your meals.

Anyone paying the escalating costs of insurance premiums knows the challenge of affording health insurance coverage. To maintain affordability, many Mainers have resorted to increasingly limited coverage – or no coverage at all. Fortunately, new health insurance options are available in Maine, thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its creation of a new type of non-profit health insurer called a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan (CO-OP). Maine Community Health Options, Maine’s new nonprofit CO-OP health insurance company, will have a booth in the Exchange Room throughout MICA. There will be information available and staff on hand to answer your questions about the health plans available for individuals and businesses on the new Health Insurance Marketplace. You can get specific guidance on the plans that are best for you.

As a new health care payer that is nonprofit, Maine-based and member-led, Maine Community Health Options (MCHO) operates with the conviction that we must do things differently to achieve different results than what we’ve experienced over the last decade: a doubling of health care costs in Maine and reduced access to many. Our newly-created, Value Based Insurance Design model for both individual and small group plans reflects this conviction. Value Based Insurance Design boils down to paying for what matters, and tending to fundamental health concerns before they cause more problematic and expensive conditions. This is hard to do in our stress-filled and busy lives, and so we’re taking out some of the financial barriers to timely care in the hope that it will allow for better and earlier access to intervention and better health outcomes. In order to help make coverage possible for all people, those with incomes up to four times the poverty level ($45,960 for an individual and $94,200 for a family of four, currently) can get reduced premiums for coverage purchased through the Marketplace. Additional cost sharing reductions are available for those with incomes less than two-and-a-half times the poverty level.

So come and talk with MCHO staff and find out what will work for your lifestyle, your budget or your business. There will be MCHO staff that can answer both individual or small business questions. You can actually sign up for the new plans at the MCHO table or get the information you need to do it on your own at home. Enrollment opened on October 1, 2013 and the plans begin on January 1, 2014.

It is Poetry Out Loud time again and we are excited again here at the Maine Arts Commission. This education program is one of our favorites, and continues to amaze us more year after year.

We announced a call for registration yesterday and we already have eight schools registered and ready to compete.

If you do not know about Poetry Out Loud then here is the scoop. It is organized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation and administered at the state level by the Maine Arts Commission. It began in high schools nationwide in 2006, the program encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. In addition to providing a meaningful arts education experience of poetry in written and spoken form, prizes are awarded to successful students and schools at the state and national level, including a $20,000 scholarship awarded to the National Champion.

The Maine Arts Commission is pleased to announce that schools can now register quickly and easily online by visiting MaineArts.com.

Please note that Poetry Out Loud can take place in your school anytime between now and January 17, 2014, as the program does not require full class periods and can be completed in just two to three weeks. However, there are many opportunities to make Poetry Out Loud a larger part of your high school’s curriculum in English Language Arts or Visual and Performing Arts, including the program’s alignment with the Common Core English Language Arts Standards in the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading and for Language. .
The brand new Innovative Media, Research and Commercialization Center, at the UMO Stewart Hall, is a 15,000+ square foot facility providing state of the art prototyping facilities, audio and video production spaces, performance areas and installation spaces. This 21st century laboratory will house three workshops during the Maine International Conference on the Arts. People interested in ways the arts, technology, and innovative practices are coming together can explore tools and equipment, including a full shop, 3D printers and 3D scanner, computer controlled machine tools, a cutting and engraving laser, plastic vacuum former, large format printers, a range of design and production software, electronics workbenches, video and still cameras, audio recording and mixing equipment, and a variety of tools for supporting interactive environments and installations. This is a great opportunity for artists to see where they can take their work in the coming years.

The three workshops available for artists are as follows:

Fabrication Lab as a Creative Tool
Many new kinds of technology tools are available to artists, such as 3D printing and computing navigated cutting. Fabrication labs have become a means of accessing these tools and serve as creative incubators and prototyping centers. This session will provide an overview the kinds of technology these centers have available. Visual artists, performers, arts organizations and community groups will better understand how these facilities are transforming the way people think about ‘production’ and how such facilities can be used for their individual endeavors.

Video, Film and Audio Recording
This session will explore the best ways of capturing moving images and audio. It will be relevant for a wide variety of project budgets and useful for people of beginner to intermediate skill sets wishing to develop a stronger understanding of video editing, film equipment, audio editing, workflow with the RED camera and other tools and philosophies of working with moving images.

Documenting and archiving your projects
Technology is transforming the way artists and organizations share information, but are you capturing and saving media assets for future use? This session will show you the best ways to document the process of a project and archive the final product. You will learn effective ways to use new tools to make this happen quickly and easily.

The Maine International Conference on the Arts (MICA) is packed full of amazing presenters and keynote speakers; one of these keynotes just happens to be Mike Daisey, who has been hailed as “the master storyteller” by The New York Times. He is the preeminent monologist in the American theater today and will speak at MICA on Saturday. Mike will also be presenting his newest work on Friday night at the Collins Center for the Arts.

Mike has been compared to a modern-day Mark Twain for his provocative monologues that combine the political
and the personal, weaving secret histories with hilarity and heart. As a playwright, his transcript of The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs was downloaded over 100,000 times in the first week it was made available. Under a revolutionary open license it has seen more than forty productions around the world and been translated into six languages. The first Chinese production opened last year in Beijing, and will tour to Hong Kong and Shenzhen this year.

We are happy to announce that an exhibition of artwork by Maine landscape artist Brian Krebs will be on display until the end of August in Maine’s Capitol Complex as part of the agency’s Arts in the Capitol program.

Those who visit and work in the Capitol will be able to experience the way in which Krebs employs various layers of geometric abstraction to achieve a sense of realism that has developed over the years into a colorful and striking vision of the Maine landscape.

Krebs, who lives in Warren, earned a bachelor's degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, where he studied philosophy and mathematics. His work has been exhibited throughout the midcoast and is included in many collections locally and abroad.

The exhibit will remain on display until the end of August 2013. All Arts in the Capitol events and free and open to the public; however, exhibitions are self-guided and may only be viewed within prescribed times: Maine Arts Commission Office 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and at the Maine State House 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. It was another amazing event at the Blaine House yesterday as First Lady Ann LePage graciously hosted, along with representatives from our congressional offices, a reception for the 2013 Congressional Arts Award Recipients.

Joining our hosts were Don Tuski from the Maine College of Art, who brought scholarships for students wishing to attend the college once they graduate. Also speaking at the event were Charles Stanhope and Julie Richard from the Maine Arts Commission. Many state representatives also attended.

All of these distinguished speakers offered words of encouragement, and of gratitude, for the award recipients. Don Tuski reminded the students that they should use their creativity in every area of their future careers.

The true stars of course were the students who received multiple rounds of applause and were photographed with the various people in attendance. The First Lady, as always, was more than happy to pose with students for photos after the event.

You can now show your support of the arts by purchasing your very own “State of the Arts" license plate.
The new specialty license plate features artwork by long-time Vinalhaven resident, Robert Indiana. The plate features the world-famous “Love” sculpture that was installed in Central Park in 1969, and later became the number one seller when issued as a stamp by the U.S. Postal Service.

But before we can all sport this amazing new plate we need to gather 2,000 pre-orders. The Maine Arts Commission and Maine Crafts Association (MCA) are seeking pre-payments to offer the plate statewide.

The specialty plate will serve as a fundraiser for the MCA and will have a direct positive impact on the arts in Maine through the organization’s marketing, business and outreach programming. The Maine Arts Commission will receive a portion of the funds to put toward their statewide arts initiatives.

We need 2,000 Mainers, with cars registered in their name, to pre-pay $29 for the specialty plate. Upon reaching that goal the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will release the plate to the 2,000 pre-paid registrants and make the plate available for purchase at all Maine BMV’s. Please visit www.mainecrafts.org/programs/license-plate to sign-up and pre-pay for your own plate today.

A Constructed Home - Brianna Hall

Brianna Hall of Rangeley Lakes Regional School and Eliza Hazen of York, a senior at Berwick Academy, were selected by a panel of experts to represent Maine in a year-long show in Washington, D.C. These students are among over 700,000 that have now taken part in this contest nationwide.

The Congressional Art Competition, jointly run by the Maine Arts Commission and Maine's congressional offices, began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. It is open to all high school students. The over-all winner of each participating district has the opportunity to have their work displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for the entire year, beginning in June. In addition, winners will be flown to Washington, DC, for the official opening of the show in June.

Congressman Michaud congratulated Brianna Hall and noted that her winning artwork, A Constructed Home, which is a collage of gelatin monoprints “will bring some much-needed Maine-made artwork to the nation’s capital.”

Congresswoman Pingree praised Eliza Hazen for her award winning painting, Wiggly Bridge in the Rain—York, Maine. “Her painting speaks from the heart about the special connection Mainers have with the water,”

The 2013 first place winners will be joined by four runners-up from each congressional district when they meet with representatives from the Congressional Offices at a Blaine House reception held in their honor. This event is the culmination of a close partnership between the Maine Arts Commission and Maine's Congressional offices. Both of Maine's congressional delegates support this program enthusiastically and have provided their full support throughout the process.
