What a line up we have this year in Maine’s state final of Poetry Out Loud. Last year we had a live TV broadcast from MPBN and the competition was played on the radio and internet too. This year we are again joined by MPBN and as an incredible bonus, Presidential Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco will be opening the proceedings with his thoughts and poems.
But of course the competition is all about our incredible students who have worked so hard to be at the Maine State Final of Poetry Out Loud. Under the guidance of our most wonderful emcee, Suzanne Nance, these ten students will take to the stage once more to recite classic and contemporary works of poetry. They will be vying for the title of Maine Champion and for the honor of representing their state at the national finals in Washington, D.C., in April.
Since December approximately 8,000 students have been competing across Maine for ten spots at the state final of Poetry Out Loud—the national poetry recitation program organized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and administered at the state level by the Maine Arts Commission. Ten students have now been chosen to compete and the state final and they are:
